What Are Swamp Coolers?
There are many situations in which a swamp cooler can do an excellent job in cooling down a house. They use a technique called evaporative cooling to remove heat from the air. It is one of the earliest forms of air conditioning and has been used by various civilizations over time. Swamp coolers are a great option for homes that don’t have a central air conditioning system and that are located in a hot and dry climate.
How They Work
Swamp coolers work by evaporating water. If you’ve ever experienced a chill right after getting out of a pool due to a gust of wind, you’ve experienced evaporative cooling. When hot air passes over a liquid, it causes a little bit of the liquid to evaporate. This takes energy and removes heat from the air while turning the liquid water into a gas.
Modern swamp coolers use an electric fan to pass warm air over a wet filter. The filter is kept wet from a reservoir of water as the air gradually causes the water to evaporate. Swamp coolers are the most effective when the air is hot and dry. If you live in a humid area, a swamp cooler isn’t the right solution.
Different Types of Swamp Coolers
A swamp cooler can be installed on the roof of your home. You’ll be able to turn it on and off with a controller in your home. Smaller portable units are also available if you’re looking for localized cooling in specific rooms.
