How To Optimize Your Energy Efficiency This Winter
As winter approaches and temperatures drop all over Texas, homeowners are questioning the best ways to improve energy efficiency during colder months. Energy efficiency means minimizing or reducing the amount of waste involved in heating the home.
It lowers costs and increases comfort. If you are looking for some ways to improve the energy efficiency of your home, some areas to consider are the thermostat, the lights and the furnace.
Check the Thermostat
The recommended temperature setting for homes during the winter months is 68 degrees. That recommendation, though, applies when the home is occupied. If you’re not at home or if you’re asleep, there’s no reason to have the temperature setting that high. Consider lowering the thermostat setting to 62 degrees during times when no one’s in the house or everyone is sleeping.
Lighting Efficiency Is Often Overlooked
As much as 10% of your home’s energy usage may be due to lighting. In order to reduce the impact of your lights on your electric bill, consider replacing inefficient incandescent bulbs with newer technologies like LED or compact fluorescent bulbs. Equipping your light switches with timers, sensors and dimmers can also reduce energy costs. Of course, it’s always a good idea to turn out the lights when you leave the room.
Your furnace is the appliance that heats your home when it’s cold outside, and it’s the one that consumes the most energy in the wintertime. As much as 40% of your home’s energy usage is probably dedicated to running the furnace, but you can reduce the cost of heating by having maintenance and cleanings performed regularly. Furnace filters should be replaced as often as every month. If your furnace is an older model, it might be a good idea to schedule an energy audit to see if an upgrade makes sense.
